Honoring Those Who Served: Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care’s Commitment to Veterans

Veterans Day 2025

By:  Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care

At Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care (KCH), we are deeply honored to care for those who have served our country. Through our We Honor Veterans program, we ensure that every Veteran receives compassionate, Veteran-centric hospice and palliative care that meets the highest standards of practice. Our commitment extends beyond clinical excellence; it’s about reducing healthcare disparities, honoring service, and recognizing the sacrifices made by Veterans and their families.

Each year, KCH has the privilege of providing end-of-life care to approximately 500 Veterans. Since joining the national We Honor Veterans program in 2013, Kansas City Hospice has achieved Level 4 partner status, reflecting our continued dedication to Veteran-focused education, support, and recognition. As a mission-driven nonprofit, we’re proud to provide the highest quality of care to all, regardless of financial resources or complexity of need.

Honor. Courage. Commitment. These values define every Veteran and service member. They also guide how we care for those who once served. Veterans often carry experiences that shape their emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, especially as they near the end of life. The We Honor Veterans initiative helps hospice and palliative caregivers understand and respond to these unique needs, whether that means offering emotional healing for past trauma, creating moments of remembrance, or simply giving a Veteran permission to “stand down” and find peace.

For many families, these moments of recognition are deeply meaningful. Dwight, a proud Veteran, was honored in a special recognition ceremony that included the presentation of a Certificate of Service and a medal acknowledging his contributions. Recognizing his service was a milestone for him and his family, including his wife, Jan, of more than 50 years, their daughter, son, and five grandchildren.

Dwight’s daughter, Lisa, shared, “Our family was so appreciative of this special event, and my dad was very humbled. Our time together is priceless, and we’re thankful that Kansas City Hospice helps to promote its importance.”

Created by the Veterans Administration (VA) and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), the We Honor Veterans program helps hospices across the country improve the quality of end-of-life care for those who served. Kansas City Hospice is proud to be one of the most active programs in the state, continually raising the bar in how we honor, serve, and thank our Veterans for their courage and sacrifice.
