When people hear the word hospice, it often brings up fear, confusion, or assumptions based on things they’ve heard secondhand.
At Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, we talk with families every day who say, “I thought hospice meant…” — only to discover reality is very different.
That’s why dispelling myths about hospice care matters so much to us. When families understand what hospice truly is (and isn’t), they’re better able to make informed, compassionate decisions during an already emotional time.
Let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions.
Myth #1: Hospice means there’s nothing more doctors can do
This is one of the most widespread myths — and one of the most damaging. Hospice isn’t about “giving up.” It’s about shifting the focus of care.
Hospice care is typically appropriate for the last months of life, not just the final days. While curative treatments may stop, care absolutely does not. Hospice teams focus on comfort, pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, and helping people live as fully as possible for whatever time remains.
In fact, studies have shown that some hospice patients actually live longer than those who don’t receive hospice care, likely because symptoms are better managed and patients are more closely monitored.

Myth #2: Hospice means stopping all treatment
Another common fear is that choosing hospice means all medications and treatments immediately end. That’s simply not true.
Hospice teams continue treatments to support comfort and quality of life. Patients may still receive medications for infections, heart conditions, or breathing issues if those treatments help them feel better. Hospice care is personalized, and decisions are guided by each patient’s goals and values.
Myth #3: Hospice and palliative care are the same thing
Hospice is a form of palliative care — but not all palliative care is hospice – it’s confusing, we know.
Palliative care (sometimes called comfort care) can be provided alongside curative treatments at any stage of a serious illness. Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care offers a Community-Based Palliative Care program for people who aren’t yet appropriate for hospice.
Hospice care, on the other hand, follows specific Medicare guidelines and is designed for people who are likely in the last six months of their life, though care can extend beyond that. Both focus on comfort and quality of life — the biggest difference is timing and structure.
Myth #4: Hospice is only for older adults
While many hospice patients are older, hospice care is for anyone facing a serious illness, regardless of age.
Kansas City Hospice’s Carousel Pediatric Care serves children from before birth into young adulthood. Families facing the unimaginable deserve expert, compassionate care — and our pediatric hospice team of experts provide just that.
Myth #5: Choosing hospice means leaving your home
Hospice care comes to you. Most hospice patients receive care in their own home, a family member’s home, or at a long-term care facility.
When symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, inpatient hospice care is available. Kansas City Hospice offers two hospice houses in the Kansas City area to support families when higher levels of care are needed.

Myth #6: All hospice care is the same
Hospice providers must meet Medicare requirements — but that doesn’t mean all hospices deliver care the same way.
As a nonprofit hospice, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is mission-driven, not profit-driven. That means we reinvest resources back into patient care, family support, grief services, education, and programs that go beyond what Medicare reimburses.
Our nonprofit status allows us to:
- Provide comprehensive grief support for more than a year after a loss
- Serve patients regardless of complexity or ability to pay
- Maintain lower nurse-to-patient ratios for more personalized care
- Offer specialized programs for Veterans, pediatric patients, and diverse communities
