Volunteer options & opportunities

Volunteers play a key role at Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, supporting our mission to bring expert care, peace of mind, comfort, guidance, and hope to people who are affected by serious illness or by grief. Our team will help you discover your strengths and guide you toward your best role. Tailored training ensures you are confident and comfortable in your position’s responsibilities. KCH volunteers provide non-clinical patient care and family support, assist with grief support services, and contribute administrative and operational support.

Volunteer Opportunities at KCH

Massage Therapy. Licensed massage therapists provide gentle massage to patients in their homes to relieve pain, decrease stress and anxiety, address edema, and manage other symptoms.

Hair Stylist. Provide haircuts with simple styling in patient homes. Your visits can increase comfort, self-esteem, and dignity, even when a patient can no longer leave their home.

Veteran-to-Veteran. Offer companionship and participate in honor ceremonies, as part of our partnership in the national We Honor Veterans program. The Vet-to-Vet Volunteer connection is a special bond between two individuals who know firsthand the impact of serving our country. Connections foster an environment where life review and healing can occur.

Notary Public. Provide an extremely important service for those who are homebound with limited financial resources. Help ensure patient wishes are honored by notarizing documents such as Medical Power of Attorney, Financial Power of Attorney, and Wills.

Companionship and Respite. Engage in activities, conversation, and emotional support for patients and/or caregivers. Support caregivers by providing up to four hours of patient companionship in their home, allowing for a rest break from direct care of their loved ones.

Solace House. Make a difference in a grieving child or family’s life by becoming a trained peer support group volunteer facilitator, a day or weekend bereavement camp volunteer, or by assisting with paperwork and office duties.

Kansas City Hospice HouseTM and NorthCare Hospice House. Administrative and other opportunities that make use of your own unique interests and talents may be available.

Story Boutique and Heart & Soul. Assist shoppers and accept donations at one of our two resale shops. Non-customer-facing duties include sorting donations, organizing and cleaning, creating displays, researching prices, helping with online sales, merchandise photography, and more.

"My dad was a hospice patient in 2005 for a month before he passed away. Shortly thereafter, a lifelong friend invited me to assist on a KC Hospice fundraising committee. Today, I'm a full-time volunteer. Could I be any more thankful for this journey? No way, not in a thousand lifetimes. Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is my calling, and I look forward to many more years of service."
