2026 was a record year for the shortest race in town
This year's Craig “Satch” & Shirley Sanders Memorial .1K raised $125,000 — the first time the race has topped $100,000 and by a wide margin. Since it started in 2012, the event has raised more than $675,000 for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. Read below to see how a lap around a bar parking lot became a Kansas City tradition.
A Family Tradition of Giving Back
If you've ever visited Patrick's Bar & No Grill, you've experienced one of Kansas City's favorite neighborhood gathering spots. Located at 82nd Street and Wornall Road, Patrick's is the kind of place where everyone feels like family.
For owner Pat Sanders, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care (KCH) became part of his family's story in 2010 when KCH cared for his brother, Craig, at home. Despite receiving one of Pat's kidneys in 2002, Craig succumbed to his illness in 2010. Five years later, KCH had the privilege of caring for Pat's mother, Shirley, at Kansas City Hospice House™.
Wanting to honor Craig's memory and give back to the organization that had cared for their family, Pat and his siblings came up with an unforgettable idea: host a ".1K Run" at a bar. What began in 2012 as a lighthearted lap around the parking lot brought together family and friends for a day of laughter, remembrance and generosity, raising more than $10,000 in its first year.
"I started a fundraiser for Kansas City Hospice to honor my brother," Pat shares. "It doesn't come close to showing my family's gratitude, but it helps our hearts to give something back to such a great organization. We were also fortunate to have the same great experience when my mom was cared for at Kansas City Hospice House."
Today, the Craig "Satch" & Shirley Sanders Memorial .1K has become a beloved Kansas City tradition. Now honoring both Craig and Shirley, the annual August event features the iconic .1K run, a cookout, silent auction, food and drinks, live entertainment and plenty of opportunities to celebrate while supporting a meaningful cause.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of participants, sponsors and volunteers, the event has raised more than $550,000 to help ensure Kansas City Hospice can continue providing expert care, comfort and compassion to patients and families throughout our community.
Every step — no matter how short — helps make a lasting difference.
This year's race took place on Sunday, August 9 at Patrick's Bar & No Grill at 8251 Wornall Road in Kansas City, MO.
You can still support the cause — will you consider a $.1K gift ($100) to the .1K?
